The Swadlincote Basketball Club was founded in 1978 and the first ever team was made up of students and staff of Pingle School, Swadlincote. Brian Abraham, Tom Dee, Barry Claydon and Tony ‘Sniffer’ Connor were some of the staff that played. Martin Smith, Steven Smith, Kevin ‘Winker’ Watson and Brian Sellers were some of the students to play.
The first kit consisted of red shirts with ironed on numbers and their first ever victory was against Burleigh College.
The club started playing in a very small gym at Pingle with an under 19’s team and a senior team in the Leicestershire League. Soon a move to Green Bank Leisure Centre to make use of a full court. At this stage they had an American Player and paying spectators (60) but due to costs they moved to Hood Park in Ashby, then onto Granville School. This was also a small gym which forced them back to Green Bank L.C. In 1999 the new sports hall at Pingle School was built and the club has been there ever since.
During the years the club has up to three Men’s teams and a Ladies team. Sponsors have come and gone, at one time they were named ‘West End Videos’ today the club is sponsored by DFORCE Engineering Ltd.
The club has enjoyed many successes over the years with Divisional and Cup trophies coming thick and fast.
We are a multicultural club with two teams and only one female member, one team in Division 3 and one in Division 4 of the Leicestershire League.
