In response to the query over wether did I learn! - 3 of the calls came from me jumping in the air and passing the ball before I landed. This never has been, and never will be a travel. As i stated standard of ref is poor! |
Carl Russell2012-04-18 13:39 |
In response to the referee discussion, i have played for over 20 years in this league. The amount of travels called lately is not only increased but it also seems to be very inconsistent. Also some courts are very slippy and this should be taken into consideration for both teams. I now coach and we try not to talk back to refs but again sometimes we only want to know what the decision was and the ref to explain and talk back to us with why they made the call. On a positive note we were reffed in a gae last night and the referee was very receptive and explained his decisions when asked, he also didn't throw technicals around and warned players/coaches if they stepped out of line so they knew not to push it any further. He also could have a laugh and a joke. |
A Ref and A Player2012-04-04 16:16 |
Just read comment below from "New Player" about the standard of refs. As an experienced player with 20 years in the game did it really take you three full games and 15 of the same calls to realise you needed to do something different ? seems like he was being consistent ! |

Could you please advise whether there are any boundries to playing in the mens league. My team is based in cambridgeshire and have just played a season in the northants league. Due to the number of players we have we are looking into alternative leagues in addition to competing in the northants league next season Thanks |

Just read an old comment from 'A referee'. - Agree that players need to treat ref's with respect. However his comment 'Finally in my view the standard of refereeing in this area is more than adequate for the standard of basketball being played in this area' - REALLY!! I have played basketball all over England to varying levels. I can probably count on both my hands the number of times i have been called for travelling in my 20+ yeras of playing this game. My first year playing Leicester league, I have had one ref who has called me for 15+ travels over 3 games. I know I have not all of a sudden started walkiing with the ball. Standard of ref is poor - pure and simple, do not even get the fundamentals right of travelling, never mind anything else. Before any ref's come back to me with abuse - i have never argued with this ref, I just put my head down and get on with it, because I am a ref myslef, and know what the abuse can feel like. But 'A referee' - I find your comment dis-respectful to players in the league, and in-keeping with the general attitude i have felt from nearly all ref's in this league. In that they do not want to be there and a general feeling that you hold yourself in a higher regard than the players! I know this will have no impact, but ref's just talk to the players, and be consistent in your calls. Does not matter if you call everything or call nothing, just be CONSISTENT - we do not care, we just need to know what we can play too! |

A Referee2010-03-23 20:39 |
In response to Bob B - Referees are supplied by clubs. It is up to each club to get their players/members developed/qualified as referees. How many qualified refs does your team supply ? Also the amount of stick these guys take from players and coaches hardly inspires young kids to referee. May be we need a respect campaign like they have in football so all those players and coaches who obviously don't know the rules of the game and have a go at the refs start to appreciate that no ref means no game and that it is their behaviour that ultimately contributes to the overall standard of the officials because who wants to give up their evening to be verbally abused all night long Finally in my view the standard of refereeing in this area is more than adequate for the standard of basketball being played in this area |
